I've pretty well stopped development on Linguas Os.
Interest was scant, and nobody else jumped on board.
Sorry.
I'm now using Debian gnu/linux, myself, but if you're new to linux, I recommend you either look into Ubuntu or PCLOS-Trans.

Linguas OS: My current desktop

I know this has little, really nothing to do with our trade, translation, but I just thought I'd share how AWESOME Linguas OS with fluxbox looks, since I'm procrastinating on translating some BIG documents, that I should really get to work on...

As such, here is my current desktop:

Displaying Tickle Therapy, my Insane Journal client, Tickle Screen, the screenshot shooter/uploader I wrote, xmms, and sakura terminal emulator.
I probably should have put my tunes on with Tickle Tunes, the front end I wrote for Mplayer...but, I didn't.
Anyway, hey, tunes are essential when we work, no? So at least that has something to do...
I'm currently listening to Bebel Gilberto. You?

I have been working on making new LinguasOS isos.
In fact, I am remastering as I write this...
Everything will be updated, and a few package changes, including:

Added Esperantilo
Removed xfmedia
Added gxine and xmms
Added TclUP and TclScreen
(not that either has much to do with translation, but an FTP tools is quite frequently useful.)
Updated the other applications I wrote, such as TickleDict,
TickleText and slock.
Removed ActiveState's Tcl8.5, and installed regular old tlc8.5,
since, to be for sure, I should not be redistributing ActiveState's package.
Added new wallpapers and fluxbox themes...very important...
Basically, it will have nearly everything I've recently done to my laptop, although, I am building
it on my experimental box, as before. (Laptop has Last.fm client, and a few other things I am
not adding to the iso, but, otherwise...)
One thing I am still pondering is whether to remove the OmegaT
from PCLinuxOS repos, which is 1.7.2, and install OmegaT 1.8.0.
1.8.0 is a huge improvement, and that's all I'm using, but, I consider
that it is useful to have the apt-able program there.
I don't know.
I have considered attempting to build an apt repo at linguasos.org
just for packages I write, and a few other things not available in the PCLinuxOS repos (such as bitext2tmx and esperantilo), and things they don't keep up with (OmegaT)...That may prove difficult, however, since
I can't get a shell on the server...
But if I can figure out a way around that, I could add said repo
to the apt repos list in Linguas OS and simplify keeping my packages
up to date, and some of these other matters.
I am considering moving my hosting, too.
I paid for a whole year on the server where linguasos.org is now, but,
I think once that's up, I will seek hosting where I can get a shell.
I've found hosts that offer even more bandwidth and space for comparable, if not better, prices.

In other news, TclScreen is now up at both freshmeat and sourceforge.
It was just approved at SF this morning, however, so, I have done nothing to set it up there, yet.

LinguasOS on old Laptops (IBM a21m)

I purchased an old IBM a21m Thinkpad, with 750mhz PIII and 512 mb ram.
It loaded up LinguasOS, and is running great!
Now I can work on the run, on the train, at Dunkin or Starbucks, etc....
I've posted a screenshot here, with gps, a task manager and system monitor, to show how few resources Linguas OS needs to run. It's crisp and clean, plenty of caffeine, if you know what I mean.
Feel free to post comments/questions about the install, etc.

I just wanted to let everyone know that, I only post specific news relevant to Linguas OS here on this blog, but, I have another, personal blog, in which I do post information regarding my development efforts, not only in regards to Linguas OS, but also, TransProCalc, my FOSS translation management program, which is part of Linguas OS, and other software projects, as well as great Latin Rock and MPB music, Brazilian culture, developments in the translation industry, including other FOSS projects, general linux hacking and management matters, and other subjects of interest to myself and other translators and linux enthusiasts.

I'm as likely to post in Spanish or Portuguese, there, as English, and, rarely, but occasionally, in French.

TransProCalc - a full project mgmt suite now!

Well, what started as a little financial calculator for translation projects has now become a full project mgmt suite.
TransProCalc is not only for LinguasOS, too. Written in Tcl.Tk, TransProCalc is completely cross-platform. We already have quite a few users all over the world (India, Austria, Denmark, US, Sweden), who are using it on Windows, as well as Linux. We haven't heard from any Mac users, yet, but, TPC will run on MacOS, too.
TransProCalc has four components, and generates four reports:

ProjectEstimate: for calculating charges and expenses and projecting revenue
ProjectDocs: for organizing information all project documents (at this date, TPC will handle up to 8 documents for one project), including unit counts, number of target translations, for multiple target languages, etc.
ProjectAssign: tracks which documents and translations have been assigned to which providers, how much each provider charges per unit, and calculates total providers expenses for the project. TPC currently handles up to 5 providers for one project.
ProjectOut: Upon completion, delivery of the project, ProjectOut gathers the relevant financial data and makes a report for invoicing and/or bookkeeping purposes.

TransProCalc generates a report in .txt format for each function that you can edit in TPC, and/or save to edit and/or print with any text editor or word processor.

There's still work to be done. We'd like to print reports directly fro TPC, round the financial figures, give the user the option to add/remove fields, embed a calculator, save/re-open projects (TPC saves reports, but can't access the data later), and a few other things.
A few people have expressed an interest in participating in the project.
Anindita Basu has come aboard to write documentation/help files, and TransProCalc has been invited to integrate with ]project-open[.

I made a little financial calculator and report generation tool that will included the next time I spin up a Linguas OS iso.
It's TransProCalc, and it will also run on Windows or Mac (like, who cares, right?).
You enter a bit of data about a translation project (project no., client id, start date, invoice date, units/words/lines/hrs, price per unit, addl charges, addl expenses, your tax rate).
And it will tell you how much is the client's price, how much you paid out in expense, what your income is, how much the government's going to steal, what you're left with after that, and even how much dough you generated per hour for your efforts.
Then it puts all the info into a tidy little report that you can edit and/or save as a text file.

Snazz, Pizazz...and those annoying adz...

I wrote up a little css stylesheet for the Linguas OS site
to snazz the site up a bit. I like your basic, informative html sites without frills and flash and all the noise, but, a little css never hurt anyone (or their site). I think it looks more professional, now. Let me know what you think.

There are advertisements on there, now, too. My experience is that affiliate advertising is often a waste of space, but, I hope you don't mind if I try, anyway.
I mean, I'm giving up hours and hours of my time to hack away at this stuff, and giving it all away for free. If I can make a buck or two from ads, or from the t-shirts, stickers, mugs and whatnot in the Linguas OS Goodies shop, I don't expect anyone to be offended. My whole purpose in creating Linguas OS was not to make money on software, but to make money using the software, and to share the software with my colleagues, but, a buck or two on the side never hurt. So don't send money, because, Linguas OS is and shall always be FREE! and I don't take donations. Buy a t-shirt, though, if you like. Members of the opposite sex will suddenly find you mysteriously irresistible. (Okay, I can't guarantee that, but, it's worth a shot...)

Of course, I'm up to my eyeballs in translation work, anyway, so,

A historia de Linguas OS

Okay, Linguas OS all got started because, first, I was invited to present on FOSS (Free Open Source Software) to the New England Translators Association (NETA).
And, I was participating in the [L4T] Linux 4 Translators Yahoo! Group, and mention that it would be cool to have a Linux distro just for us, just for translators.
This started a whole thread, and somebody else made a remaster of PCLOS with the tools we use most, and called it PCLOSTrans, and that was pretty cool, but, it was too big, at 1.1gb to fit on one CDRom, and I needed a LiveCD to present to NETA, and, I said as much, and Peter Sandrini (the guy who made PCLOSTrans) said, well, why don't YOU make one, and pointed me to where I could learn more about doing just such a thing, and, well, within 24 hours the first Linguas OS was created.

Now, PCLOSTrans is a valuable tool, and I highly recommend it to anyone that can download 1.1gb and burn it to a DVD and want to try FOSS tools for translators.

Linguas OS differs from PCLOSTrans in that, first, it has fluxbox as the default window manager.
This enabled Linguas OS to be small enought to fit on one CDRom.
Also, Linguas OS does not contain any packages that are not part of the PCLOS repositories, so, they can all be maintained, updated, etc., automagically with apt.
And, Linguas OS has it's own artwork.
Linguas OS doesn't include mulitmedia software, games, and other goodies. At least, not on the LiveCD. These things can all be added, freely, using the synaptic package manager after it has been installed to your hard drive.

The next release, coming soon, will include some scripts that I wrote to facilitate some things, like adding a full KDE desktop, etc., additional documentation, stuff like that.

So, basically, Linguas OS is light, quick, and contains tools for translators, all on one LiveCD, a download of only 412mb at the current release, which can run from your hard drive without affecting your current system, and allow you to try out some of the most important FOSS tools for translators.
It can also be installed to your hard drive.
Upon installation to your hardrive, it becomes a PCFluxboxOS installation, and can easily be made into a complete PCLOS install, with KDE or Gnome, and all kinds of other software applications that are freely available for download and easily installed with a few mouse-clicks using the Synaptic package manager.

There you have it.

I intend to use this blog to post news and communicate with users.

Of course, we already have other tools for similar functions, including a wiki and a Yahoo! group/e-mail list, a forum...
